Help from Auditor's office on storm damage, housing payment assistance

Medina County homeowners may be eligible for a reduction on the taxable value of their homes because of recent damage from storms.

In addition, the County Auditor's office is taking appointments for individuals who may be having trouble making their housing payments. Auditor Michael Kovack recomments county residents seek help early, and emphasizes that the service is free and confidential.

County forms Foreclosure Prevention Taskforce

The Medina County Commissioners have combined their efforts with other agencies in both the public and private sector to form the Medina County Foreclosure Prevention Taskforce. This group is chaired by Commissioner Pat Geissman and will include the services of the Housing Network and its foreclosure committee, the STOP Initiative, Neighborhood Housing Services, and the Extension Services. Other agencies involved with the group include Medina County Community Legal Aid, the Auditor's Office, and the Department of Planning Services.

The taskforce has created a web site as well as a local telephone number, 330-722-HOME (4663) to assist county residents through the foreclosure process. The website offers some helpful information, including a Top 10 Foreclosure Myths article written by Tim Kozlowski, attorney for Community Legal Aid.

City offers discount program on prescription drugs

Brunswick has introduced a program that will provide free prescription drug discount cards to City residents. The program is administered by CVS Caremark, and the card can be used at a wide variety of area pharmacies. There is no enrollment form required to get a card, no membership fee, and the card can be used any time prescriptions are not covered by insurance.

Need help paying those winter gas bills?

With the cold weather approaching, many people who are still suffering from the weak economy may be concerned about their winter heating bills. Columbia Gas reports that a large number of customers who qualify for financial assistance do not receive help, for a number of reasons. They may not realize they qualify, or they may not even know where to seek assistance.columbia logo

One positive factor is that natural gas prices are at near-decade lows, thanks to large supplies and a mild hurricane season. Even so, some customers are still struggling with their household budgets. Columbia Gas urges customers to contact your utility company at the first sign you may have trouble paying your bill. The sooner they hear about an issue, the more options that are available for assistance.

Columbia Gas wants to assure customers that shutting off service is always a last resort, and that they are willing to work with customers. Those whose service is shut off or at risk of being shut off should consider the following options:
