A history of law enforcement in Brunswick
Prior to 1960, law enforcement in what was then Brunswick Township was provided by a constable. The constable’s office was founded in 1937 following the Great Depression when the citizens held an election and voted into office two Constables. The original uniform was an olive green hip length jacket and trousers with a black stripe down each leg. They carried a Smith & Wesson .38 caliber revolver and patrolled in a 1935 Chevrolet with cloth signs stretched across each front door.
In 1960, the city was incorporated and the present day Brunswick Police Department was founded. The department consisted of a Chief, a Sergeant, and 3 Patrol officers. The first Police Chief was John (aka Fuzzy) Mroczek. Chief Mroczek served from 1960-1966. The original police department was located in the building that is now Fire Station #1 at 4383 Center Road.
In 1974, the present day City Hall at 4095 Center Road was built and the police station was relocated to that building. BPD remained in that police station until 1992 when the current police facility and jail were built connected to the City Hall.
Today the Brunswick Division of Police is a highly trained professional law enforcement agency providing police service to a city of 36,000 residents. The Division has a Chief, Lieutenant, 9 Sergeants, 30 Patrol Officers, 3 part time Officers, a Community Policing Coordinator, a Communication Supervisor, 11 Communication Specialists, 2 Part Time Communication Specialists, and 1 full time and 1 part time Animal Control Officer.
