It is necessary to obtain a permit from the Director of Service and Streets before planting trees in the tree lawn area (between the sidewalk and the street curb). Residents should provide a hand drawing of the tree lawn area showing the edge of pavement, sidewalk, driveway, fire hydrants or other appurtances in the tree lawn. The drawing should also indicate the location, size and species of each tree planted.
No trees are permitted within 40' of the intersection of two street right-of-way lines
Certain trees with undesirable characteristics such as fruit, low branches, unpleasant odors, excessively thick foliage, susceptible to disease, or large root systems are not permitted in tree lawn areas. Willow, poplar and cottonwood trees are not permitted on tree lawns or within 100' of a sewer line.
The City will only remove dead trees or trees that are a hazard or a public nuisance after the abutting property owner has been notified of this hazard/nuisance. If after a 10 day period the hazard/nuisance is not abated, the City will abate the hazard/nuisance with all costs incurred assessed to the abutting homeowner. The City will not remove stumps. If a hazard is imminent, the City will take the necessary action to remove the imminent hazard and then notify the abutting property owner to take appropriate action to fully correct the problem.
Trees, or parts thereof, that fall and create an obstruction on the street or sidewalk will be removed so that an obstruction to the street or sidewalk no longer exists. If the abutting property owner had been previously notified of this nuisance, costs for this work will be assessed to the abutting property owner. Efforts will be made to determine if the property owner wishes to retain the wood from the tree.
The City will trim branches of trees that overhand curbs or edges of pavement that may cause an obstruction to vehicles using the roadway.
The City will also trim branches of trees that create sight obstructions to traffic or traffic control devices.
