Shortly after 6 pm on Tuesday February 20, 2018 agents from the Medina County Drug Task Force conducted a controlled purchase of heroin in the city of Brunswick. The investigation took place in the parking lot of a Center Road (SR303) business just west of Interstate 71. Officers from the Brunswick Division of Police were in place to stop the suspect’s car after the transaction took place.  Once agents completed the transaction, Brunswick officers attempted to stop the car near the intersection of SR303 and I-71 as requested. The driver, later identified as 26 year old Deangelo L. Speed, initially stopped his car but then sped off fleeing from officers northbound on Interstate 71. Officers pursued Speed’s car north on I-71 to the area of the Interstate 480 interchange where Troopers from the Ohio State Highway Patrol deployed tire deflation devices. Speed attempted to avoid the tire deflation devices and his car struck the concrete median dividing wall. With his car disabled, Deangelo Speed and a passenger in the car were taken into custody with assistance from officers from the Brook Park Police Department. No injuries were sustained by the occupants of the car, police officers or members of the public.

During the course of the pursuit officers saw objects being thrown from Speed’s car. Several motorists also called to report seeing items being thrown from the car. Task force agents and Brunswick officers were unable to determine what these items may have been. Agents will be checking the area of the pursuit during daylight hours.

Deangelo Speed was arrested and taken to the Medina County Jail. Speed was initially charged with Failure to Comply with the Order of a Police Officer (Fleeing) a 3rd degree felony.  Additional charges for drug trafficking (a felony of the 4th degree) and Tampering with Evidence (3rd degree felony) are likely once the case is reviewed by the Medina County Prosecutor’s Office.  Speed has a criminal history which includes a Aggravated Assault charge for which he was sentenced to 5 years in prison. On February 9th, 2018 Deangelo Speed was convicted of Attempted Trafficking or Illegal Use of Food Stamps.  Speed will be held in the Medina County Jail pending his arraignment in the Medina Municipal Court. The passenger in Speed’s car was released at the scene without criminal charges being filed at this time.
