For Our Safety
Facts on the Safety Levy
On November 5, 2019, Brunswick Voters will consider an issue to provide for continued Police and Fire Services in our community.
Issue #13 will read as follows:
SHALL THE ORDINANCE PROVIDING FOR THE CONTINUATION OF A SIXTY-FIVE ONE-HUNDREDTHS PERCENT (0.65%) LEVY ON INCOME FOR THE PURPOSE OF MAINTAINING STAFFING LEVELS FOR THE SAFETY FORCES OF THE CITY FOR A CONTINUING PERIOD OF TIME, COMMENCING ON JANUARY 1, 2023, WHICH LEVY SHALL CONTINUE TO BE IN ADDITION TO THE CITY’S ONE PERCENT (1.00%) AND THIRTY-FIVE ONE-HUNDREDTHS PERCENT (0.35%) LEVIES ON INCOME THAT ARE NOW IN EFFECT FOR A CONTINUING PERIOD OF TIME, BE PASSED?
HOW ARE THESE SERVICES CURRENTLY FUNDED?
The Police and Fire Divisions are funded by two dedicated safety income tax levies. In 2019, these levies will provide approximately 80% of the safety forces funding. The current dedicated 0.65% income tax will expire at the end of 2022. Maintaining the existing safety services will require this funding.
I RECEIVE RETIREMENT AND/OR INVESTMENT INCOME. HOW WILL THIS AFFECT ME?
According to state law, retirement and investment incomes are not taxable for this levy. You can find an additional definition regarding taxable income in Ohio Revised Code Section 718.
WHY IS THIS REVENUE NEEDED?
We will use the revenue to maintain our existing Police and Fire Division service levels well into the future. The need for Police and Fire services is continual; the funding is currently temporary. This replacement levy would make the funding permanent.
WHEN WOULD THIS BECOME EFFECTIVE?
The continual levy would be effective on January 1, 2023. This is not a rate increase. The current rate is 2%. If this levy passes, it will remain at 2%.
