Firefighter/Paramedic Entrance Examination
The Brunswick Civil Service Commission will give a competitive examination for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic. The examination will be given on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at 9:00 a.m., at the Brunswick Recreation Center, 3637 Center Road, Brunswick, Ohio. On the day of the examination, each applicant must identify himself or herself by means of a valid Ohio driver’s license.
The starting hourly rate for 2026 is $25.71, with a 3-year rate of $34.92 per hour. The City offers a competitive benefits package including medical, prescription, dental, vision and life insurance after 90 days, as well as covering the 12.25% employee contribution to OP&F.
An eligible candidate must be at least eighteen (18) years old by the date of examination, a United States citizen with a high school diploma or GED equivalent, possess a valid Ohio Driver’s License without suspension or revocation in any state, and be a resident of Medina County, or any County adjacent. The candidate must also have the following qualifications:
• By the time of appointment obtained current State of Ohio Firefighter II Certificate
• By the time of appointment obtained current State of Ohio EMT- Paramedic Certification
• By the time of appointment obtained a valid Cuyahoga Community College “firefighter’s physical agility test” certificate with a time of no more than 4 minutes and 30 seconds, or current CPAT certificate from a certified organization.
Before appointment, the candidate will be required to submit to a computer voice stress analysis. The successful candidate will need to complete a pension physical, to include drug and alcohol testing, by a licensed physician chosen by the City of Brunswick.
The position of Firefighter/Paramedic has a one-year probationary period.
A minimum score of 70% is needed to pass the written examination. Extra credit points will be added to passing scores with proof of the following:
Honorable Military Discharge (Form DD214)
Education (Bachelor Degree / Associate Degree)
Being a 2-year resident of Brunswick
Documentation must be received by the end of the application period, to include: a copy of Form DD214 with honorable discharge status clearly indicated; a copy of college diploma; proof of residency. Please provide copies which will be retained for scoring of extra credit.
Qualified persons must register for the examination by completing an employment application. A non-refundable $30.00 Application Fee (check or cash) will be collected with each completed application.

Firefighter/Paramedic Lateral Transfer
The City of Brunswick is accepting applications for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic – Lateral Transfer. The process of lateral entry is established as a method for hiring experienced Firefighter/Paramedics from other jurisdictions who have obtained and maintained State of Ohio Paramedic licensure and Firefighter II certification, or a state equivalent. This position is exempt from competitive examinations, but must meet the minimum requirements of the Civil Service Commission Rules and Regulations and the City Charter.
The starting wage for a candidate in 2026 with less than four (4) years of full-time fire and paramedic experience shall be $27.01, with an increase after one (1) full year with the City of Brunswick. The starting wage for a candidate with four (4) or more years of full-time fire and paramedic experience shall be $29.22, with an increase after one (1) full year with the City of Brunswick.

City Manager/Safety Director
The City of Brunswick is accepting resumes for the position of City Manager/Safety Director. The City Manager/Safety Director is the Chief Administrative Officer/Safety Director of the City and is responsible to a seven-member Council. The City Manager/Safety Director provides direct supervision to all department/division heads, including police and fire. The City of Brunswick has an operating budget of approximately $35-45 million and 125 full time employees.
A Bachelor’s Degree in a pertinent field from an accredited institution of higher learning and: experience as a City Manager or a minimum of two years experience as an assistant City Manager, or ten years in other senior municipal managerial positions are required. Candidate must have strong communication skills, the ability to maintain effective working relationships with all levels of City management and other governmental agencies.
